The Patterning of Hope
Time and space to think and take stock. Learning and applying frameworks and practices in good company with others. Playing your part in the patterning of hope.
In collaboration with futures practitioner and systems thinker Bill Sharpe, this programme brings together the world-leading Three Horizons approach with our Four Pathways to Spirited Leadership.
Designed for those working to transform some aspect of their organisation, community or a wider system, it helps find pathways through complex, uncertain territory.
Our next programme starts November 2025 - full details will be published here soon.
What can I expect?
You will be invited to bring a live change project and associated challenges to the table. Whatever your focus, we will encourage you to hold the widest possible frame, exploring themes of transformation, adaptation, regeneration and collaboration.
Through a combination of facilitator input and highly interactive sessions, you will:
Learn Three Horizons thinking and practices, including how to give equal voice to diverse individual contributions
Build your own Three Horizons map
Develop your narrative and story of change
Learn practices for working constructively with the different voices of continuity and change, catalysing more generative relationships
Distinguish between innovation that sustains the status quo or fosters transformation
Turn insights into action, creating and reviewing next step plans as part of an iterative, experimental approach.
You will learn alongside others seeking to transform their own structures, products, mindsets, policies, processes, practices and/or cultures. We hope you will feel encouraged and supported by sharing experiences and insights, as part of a growing movement of people working to repattern our future.
To help develop your thinking, language and practices through time, we suggest you consider joining the programme with a colleague, someone directly engaged with the project alongside you, or a ‘thinking partner’ acting as a mentor or coach. We have a fee structure that we hope makes this accessible. Read on to find out more about our pricing and the programme structure.
What format will the programme take?
Ahead of the first workshop, we will invite you to join us for a one-on-one conversation, to share more about the work you are engaged in, ask any questions you have and get ready for what lies ahead.
The main input on Three Horizons is offered during the first 3 weeks with 3 x 3 hour online workshops plus 2 x 1 hour optional Q&A sessions.
A monthly practise circle of 1 hour follows, for 11 months. This provides the opportunity for ongoing reflection, support and sharing across the group as you continue your work to pattern hope.
To get best value from the programme, we suggest you intentionally allocate time during the initial 3 weeks of the programme to apply the tools and thinking of Three Horizons, with the colleague you are working with, or others in your community or organisation.
One-to-one coaching and/or shadow consulting is also available, at additional cost. Contact info@leadingthroughstorms.org if this is of interest.
Who will facilitate?
Kirstin Irving and James Barlow will lead the programme. With long-standing experience of consulting within and to corporations and other organisations, and each with their own interests in regeneration, collaboration and community development, Kirstin and James have worked with Three Horizons and with Bill Sharpe for many years. They understand the challenges of transformative change, including what it takes to hold a vision and work with others through messiness and confusion to realise it.
Leading Through Storms is a member of the Future Stewards Three Horizons Practice Network.
