4Rs of Deep Adaptation
In his seminal Deep Adaptation work, Professor Jem Bendell invited us to engage with the likelihood or inevitability that, rather than continue in their current forms, our societies will undergo some form of collapse as a result of climate change.
With this in mind, he offered four themes to guide our inquiry about the adaptations we might helpfully make in our lives:
Resilience: How do we KEEP what we really want to keep, what do we most value?
Relinquishment: What do we need to LET GO of, so as not to make matters worse?
Restoration: What can we BRING BACK to help us with the coming difficulties and tragedies?
Reconciliation: With what and whom shall we MAKE PEACE as we face our common mortality?
Our Leading Through Storms community has found this 4Rs framework helpful and the resources we offer here are designed to support you as you consider the adaptations you might make in your own life.
Bringing together four resources - one for each of the Rs - the downloads you will receive include some of our reflections and experiences, and a series of sentence stems to support your own reflection and deeper inquiry. We recommend you set aside around 30 minutes in the first instance to engage with each R, and you may wish to return to the materials time and again.
We recognise that it can be challenging to engage with these ideas and big questions. If you’d like to book a 30 minute conversation with one of us to explore your restless energies and learn more about how the Leading Through Storms community can support you, book a discovery call by emailing info@leadingthroughstorms.org.
You can read Jem Bendell’s original Deep Adaptation work here.
